Whether we know it or not, whether we like it or not, we take in numerous toxins on a daily basis. They can be in the form of household products, cigarette smoke, junk food, pesticides on vegetables, air pollution and a host of other unpleasant elements that we often have little control over. 

If that’s not enough, our body also produces toxins. These result from our normal metabolic processes, stress and any illness that we are suffering. 

Our body needs to get rid of these harmful substances and, as usual, it saves the day with very capable detoxifying systems which involve the lungs, skin, kidneys, liver, lymph, blood, gallbladder and colon. So we definitely have cause to wonder why we should bother with any kind of detox program when we have it all "in-house" already. 

The problem lies in the number of toxins that crowd in on us daily. Years ago there simply weren’t so many harmful substances out there. Nowadays our body is having a hard time coping with the load. It needs help! 

The detoxification process in the body, like everything, takes energy - that is energy which could be used elsewhere. If the detox system is working overtime, other parts of your body will suffer. Freeing up your detoxification system will mean that your body can focus on doing more important things like preventing chronic illnesses, repairing damaged tissues, improving health etc. Actively detoxing our system is an easy way to help our body to do its own healing and protect itself against disease. 

Think about it, those toxins are not just sitting there waiting for their time to be eliminated, they are causing disease. So often we hear of the carcinogenic (cancer-causing) elements around us and the dangerous heavy metals that we are ingesting. The faster these toxins are out of your system, the better. We are talking of preventing heart disease, cancer and degenerative diseases here. 

There are a number of symptoms that indicate the need for detox; and a simple cleansing can help relieve, amongst others:

 

  • Fatigue
  • Digestive complaints (IBS, flatulence, stomach pain etc.)
  • Allergies
  • Recurring infections (colds, flu, candida etc.)
  • Headaches
  • Mental drowsiness and poor concentration
  • Depression
  • Sleeping problems

 

When you do undertake a body cleanse, you need to be aware that there are symptoms of detox. These can include the likes of:

 

  • Headaches
  • Irritability
  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Muscle aches
  • And, in fact, many of your old symptoms

 

Don’t worry, this is normal and you simply need to bear with it. If you are severely overloaded with toxins, you may also reach a healing crisis detox which is when your body is trying to eliminate toxins faster than it is able to. The symptoms will become worse and the first thought is that the detox is actually making you sick. Hang in there! The worst will last only one to three days and then you’ll be through it.

 

By now you may well be wondering what on earth you’ll be doing to yourself that is going to result in a "crisis" and "things getting worse first". Well, it’s not such a big deal. Most detox programs are pretty simple and don’t involve much more than a change in diet. You may need to eat or drink certain things at specific times. You may need to add in some supplements or herbs etc.

 

And, once you are through, you can enjoy:

 

  • Better immune system
  • More energy
  • More efficient digestion
  • Improved natural detox process
  • Fewer allergic symptoms
  • Improved metabolism (good for the weight)

 

As you can see, it is really worth the effort (which isn’t that huge). You’ll notice such a difference that you’ll make it a regular thing - a bit like vacuuming your car.
